Meet MPP Thornhill, Laura Smith, Holiday Must-Reads, Guilt-Free BBQ Sauce, Netflix's "Monsters"

    Laura Smith is a seasoned legal professional, having owned and managed a litigation support company within the GTA. Since June 2022, she is the elected MPP, Member of Provincial Parliament for Thornhill and Parliamentary Assistant to the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services. Residing with her family in Thornhill for 22 years, Laura is a Director with the Thornhill Thunder Soccer Club and is former vice president of a local co-operative nursery school. She is an avid swimmer, soccer mom, and a dedicated volunteer. Laura is also an active advocate for the community, especially for youth and the elderly. She is a champion against Antisemitism and hate and has worked with Ontario’s and the Canadian Government to help facilitate the tools necessary to keep the community safe. She understands the challenges families caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s and dementia face and advocates for awareness around issues for both those suffering from the disease, as well as their families and loved ones. I sat down with Laura in her Constituency Office in Thornhill to discuss her decision to go into politics, how she wants to serve the her riding, what a typical day in her life looks like, Bill 138 the Change of Name Amendment Act 2023, why is it important to prevent offenders from changing their names to escape their past actions, Bill 121, the Improving Dementia Care in Ontario Act 2023, her personal experience with dementia & how it impacted her perspective on the need for quality dementia care and on the bill, and lots more!
