Have you ever been told, "It's not personal, it's just business"—and thought, "Sure it is..."? That's exactly how many people reacted when CBS canceled The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and retired the entire franchise. Hi everyone, I'm Janette Burke—Media Personality, TV Show & Podcast Host (Janette's TV Podcast), Red Carpet/Event Host, MC/Speaker, Brand Ambassador, and Executive Producer of Janette Burke Productions. In this Janette's Take On..., I'm exploring the cancellation of one of late-night television's biggest programs and the questions many people are asking. CBS says the decision was financial. Like many traditional television programs, late-night TV has been struggling as audiences increasingly move toward streaming services, YouTube, podcasts, and social media. The network reportedly said the show was losing millions annually and that replacing it with less expensive programming would make the time slot profitable. Yet some observers remain skeptical. Colbert's show continued to rank among the highest-rated programs in late-night television. The cancellation also followed public comments Colbert made criticizing Paramount's settlement of a lawsuit involving Donald Trump. To be clear, there is currently no public evidence proving political pressure caused the cancellation. However, the timing has sparked debate among journalists, media observers, entertainment figures, and viewers. For SAVVY women over 40, this story is about much more than one television host. It's about who controls media, how corporate decisions influence what we watch, and the continuing evolution of the entertainment industry. What do YOU think? Was this simply a business decision—or was there something more behind it? Comment below.
